Perfect Music Video...

this is the brand new video from Mayer Hawthorne for "Just Aint Gonna Work Out". i think its one of the best videos ive seen all year.

it is conceptual, but simple and to the point.. it is shot and edited beautifully but doesnt rely on ground-breaking style or effects.. it is touching and humorous.. and i love the use of Hawthorne's iconic heart-shaped vinyl as a major prop to push the concept of the video.. also Dam-Funk's cameo as the smooth dude who steal's Mayer's girl. Djarum Black Clove cigarette and all. hilarious.

also, at :22 seconds, check out Peanut Butter Wolf's cameo as Folerio! hilarious.

War Of The Gods

this is that epicly amazing Billy Paul (Me & Mrs Jones) song that i played this sunday on the show. so glad i found this record at a random thrift store on 79th and Stony Island.

really.. 10 minutes is not enough for this track!

Wizard Radio Setlist 4/26/09

this week was interesting. i brought a blank cd to the studio to burn at least 80 min of my set if nothing else, and i foolishly didn't "finalize" the cd, so unless i can bring it back and still do that effectively, i dont have mp3s this week either.. but if so i will post them later.

also, i was in Studio A, the newly fixed and refurbished one, and there are 3 BRAND new Technics, yet only one of them was working properly. one sounded odd (hopefully just a poor connection) and one already has a broken cartridge/needle. it was disappointing because i care about the station, and also because i love playing vinyl and brought a stack of my own, and ended up with only one functional table which makes playing a good show difficult as you can imagine. anyhow heres the setlist:

Yukihiro Takahashi - "Poisson D'Avril" & "Theme From Mari"
Bullion - "Keep It Tidy"
Exile - "Extra Funk"
The Mary Jane Girls - "Candy Man"
The Fever - "Ponyboy"
Monchy - "De Aquello Nada"
Four Tet - "She Moves She"
Billy Paul - "War Of The Gods" (this is amazing hope i can post an mp3 later)
Massive Attack - "Hymn Of The Big Wheel"
Prince - "Head"
Hint - "Quite Spectacular"
Jimmy McGriff/Junior Parker - "Pretty Baby"
Bill Laswell - "Milky (DJ Grazhoppa rmx)"
Charles Mingus - "Theme For Lester Young"
Dave Gordon - "I Would Like To Tell You So"
Lonnie Liston Smith - "Devika (Goddess)"
Digable Planets - "NY Is Red Hot"
Curse Of The Golden Vampire - "Iron Ghetto Man Crusher"
Kleeer - "Get Tough"
*unknown song which replaced "Doowhutchyalike" on YouTube*
Waajeed - "Tetris"
Jay Scarlett - "The Jawn"
Digital Underground - "Doowhutchyalike"
Al Green - "Higher Plane"
Lee "Scratch" Perry - "Heavy Voodoo" feat. Keith Richards
Howlin' Wolf - "Aint Superstitious"
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - "Willow Trees Bend"
The White Stripes - "Sugar Never Tasted So Good"
CloudDead - "Physics Of A Unicycle"
Teddy Pendergrass - "The More I Get, The More I Want"
DJ Frane - "The Day The Listeners Came"
Bonde Do Role - "Solta O Frango"

all in all, not a bad show this week.. guess i made up for the numerous technical difficulties i had. stay tuned!

Wizard Radio setlist 4/19/09

This morning i was short on time and only grabbed a few records out of my own collection, so had to use mostly stuff from the station's collection, leading to one of my most "freeform" and strange sets yet. I liked a lot of it though, and actually was able to record it from home via my realplayer...

BUT I still don't have an mp3 for yall.. turns out Realplayer records on a specific fileformat (IVR) which currently is completely un-convertable... so until someone invents a software to convert this format, i have nothin to show yall... its such a pain in the ass.. but i'll have to figure somethin out eventually. anyhow heres the setlist regardless:

Barry White - "Let Me In & Let's Begin With Love" (love this joint)
Nouveaux Nation - "Party Time Lovers"
Prefuse 73 - "Dubs That Don't Match"
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - "Betcha By Golly, Wow"
Dam-Funk - "Black"
Enon - "Hocus Pocus"
Little Junior Parker - "Next Time You See Me"
Miriam Makeba - "House Of The Rising Sun"
Pansy Division - "Alpine Skiing"
Lou Rawls - "Gee Baby, Aint I Good To You"
The Stylistics - "Pay Back Is A Dog"
Birdsongs of the Mesozoic - "Lost In The B-Zone"
The Sandpipers - "Louie, Louie"
Barry White - "Louie, Louie" (two very different, very cool versions)
Scout Niblett - "I'll Be A Prince (Shhh)"
Bobby Womack - "There's One Thing That Beats Failing"
Bill Withers - "Kissing My Love"
Gossip - "Don't Make Waves"
The Spellbinders - "We're Acting Like Lovers"
Bobby Blue Bland - "It's My Life Baby"
SemiAutomatic - "Wolfcentric"
The Miracles - "Gemini"
Sly & Robbie - "Woman For The Job" featuring Queen Latifah
Nobody - "White Folding Slowly"
The Magnolias - "Don't See That Girl"
The Young Gods - "La Fille De La Mort"
The Heavenly Five - "I Shall Not Be Moved"
Zlad - "I Am The Anti-Pope" (lol @ these two tracks back-to-back)
U Can Unlearn Guitar - "Porcelain Eyes"
Killdozer - "Space: 1999"
Little Milton - "The Cradle Is Robbin' Me"
Deerhoof - "Basket Ball Get Your Groove Back"
Heretix - "Season Of The Witch"
Katie Webster - "Red Negligee"
Leslie Hall - "Shazam I'm Glamorous"
Dam-Funk - "Purple"
Miriam Makeba - "One More Dance"
Faun Fables - "Dream On A Train"

seemed to be an unintentional theme of sexual innuendo today judging by the lyrics of songs by Katie Webster, Killdozer, and Pansy Division... unintentional i swear!!

still wish i had an mp3... :(

Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes

I first bought this record, not really being familiar with his music, because the cover art was so wonderful. I listened to a few seconds here and there, and originally passed it off as early elevator music, but it is so much more.
this album (i hope to find many more in the future) is a sort of spaced out, formless, psychadelic spiritual jazz... it really took me somewhere.
there is a really cool rendition of Pharoah Sander's "Colors" (one of my favorite jazz records of all time) called "Colors of the Rainbow"...
but i will show an example that people might be able to appreciate in a more associative sort of way.
here is the track "Devika (Goddess)":

Sound familiar? here's "NY is Red Hot" by Digable Planets:

Wizard Radio setlist 4/12/09

So today was my first set in the new and improved Studio A. It took a few minutes to figure out the set-up, but i ended up with a set to be proud of. Unfortunately, still no mp3's available for yall... they decided not to install Audacity in the new studio, so my only future option is burning a cd... so i'd have to select 80 minutes out of a 3 hr set, and that just doesn't seem fair...

anyhow.. here's todays (well-integrated freeform) set:

The Kentucky Colonels - "Lee Highway Blues" & "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down"
Michelle Fleming - "Danger! (Zach's Danger Dub Mix)"
Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto - "The Girl From Ipanema"
RFTW (Ready For The World) - "Digital Display"
Giorgio Moroder - "Leopard Tree Dream (Cat People soundtrack)"
Big Mama Thornton - "Sweet Little Angel"
Instant Funk - "Slap, Slap, Lickedy Lap"
Cat Stevens - "Angel Sea"
Stereolab/Hairy Butter - "Brain Drain"
Barry White - "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me"
K.C. Alstar (or Root Uprising) - "Deadly Style (or Deadly Dub)" *different label on the record and the sleeve.. not sure which is accurate*
Circulatory System - "Yesterday's World"
Stevie Wonder - "Skeletons"
Count Basie and his Orchestra - "Flat Foot Floogie"
Taiwan Deth - "Case Closed, Good Night"
Dreamhouse - "Jump & Prance (Club Mix)" featuring Caesar
Eddie Kendricks - "Happy"
Drum Komputer - "January Summer"
Ray Charles - "After My Laughter Came Tears"
Stanley Clarke/George Duke - "Heroes"
Herbie Hancock - "King Cobra"
Barry White - "Love's Theme"
Leon Redbone - "Aint Misbehavin' (I'm Savin' My Love For You)"
Donny Hathaway - "Little Ghetto Boy (Come Back Charleston Blue soundtrack)"
Arlo Guthrie - "Coming Into Los Angeles"
Daedelus - "Impending DOOM" featuring DOOM
Kiss Me Deadly - "Dance 1"
Stevie Wonder - "Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away" & "Too Shy To Say"

So yea... good one this week.

tune in sundays as usual 3-6pm 88.3fm or wzrdchicago.org via realplayer.

Wizard Radio Setlist 4/5/09

hey yall.

welcome to my new blog. didn't want to litter the myspace blog every week with setlists, so thought i'd move them, and other musical ramblings over here.

The show was kind of frustrating today, because i just returned to K Starke's Records again on friday and bought a big stack of records i was really excited about, and then one of the turntables at the radio station was messed up and so half my records sounded like crap. I also wasn't paying close attention today, so my transitions were horrible. I'll just have to bring some of these records back next time when Studio A is back up and running so that i can do them justice.

anyhow here's today's setlist:

M83 - "Moon Child"
Ray Charles - "Rainy Night In Georgia" & "If You Wouldn't Be My Lady"
Miriam Makeba - "Ngalala Phantsi"
Grooove & The Gang - "In The Mood To Party (Crazy Jam)"
Black Moth Super Rainbow - "Raspberry Dawn"
The Temptations - "Papa Was A Rolling Stone"
Spiritualized - "Sad Days Lonely Nights"
Prince - "Purple People Paisley Punk Promo (white label "1999" House remix)"
Heavenly Five - "Lord Search My Heart"
Brenda Fassie - "Black President"
The James Gang - "Thanks" & "Ya Dig?"
Viola - "Little Girl (Put Cha Clothes Back On Dub)"
Grover Washington Jr. - "Georgia On My Mind"
Freeez - "Pop Goes My Love"
Little Junior Parker/Bobby Blue Bland - "Barefoot Rock"
Roger (Troutman) - "Heard It Through The Grapevine"
Tarentel - "Elephant Shoes"
Suga Bang Bang - "Don't Test/Wu Stallion"
Buddy Miles - "The Way I Feel Tonight"
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - "Lay & Love"
The Spellbinders - "For You"
Crystal Castles - "Crimewave (Crystal Castles vs Health)"
Isaac Hayes - "Something"

so yea.. woulda been a good set if it werent for turntable2 being faulty and ruining the sound of the Purple People Paisley Punk Promo record, as well as the Viola and Freeez ones... so i'll have to bring those again later. anyhow... stay tuned as usual.

sunday 3-6pm central. 88.3fm chicago. wzrdchicago.org worldwide via realplayer.

cheers!
